Student Poll Worker Program

Thank you for your interest in participating in the 2024 Primary Election!

If you are 18 years of age or will be 18 years of age by April 23, 2024, you must be a registered voter in Montgomery County to qualify for the Student Poll Worker Program.

Your voter registration application must be received by our office by 5PM on Monday, April 8, 2024. Failure to meet the program’s requirements will result in your removal from the program.

Click here to submit your  voter registration application.

As part of the Student Poll Worker Program, you may only serve as a Clerk or Machine Operator. Prior to Election Day, you must watch the instructional videos below and review the manuals for these two roles.

You may also attend an In-Person Training session if you'd like to see a live demo of the ballot scanner and have a more hands-on experience. If you're interested in attending training in-person, you must sign up for a slot here.

Pre-Election Requirements for Student Poll Workers:

  • Review the presentation on Roles, Rules & Responsibilities
  • Watch the videos and review manual for the Machine Operator role
  • Watch the video and review manual for the Clerk role
  • Contact the Voter Services team if you have any questions regarding the material

1. Roles, Rules & Responsibilities

This presentation will go through the different roles you will see in each polling location, and provide you a better understanding of what to expect depending on the role served (Clerk or Machine Operator).

Click here to view the presentation.

2. Machine Operator Role

The videos below will prepare you for the Machine Operator role. They cover how to open the ballot scanner for use by voters, how to close the ballot scanner at the end of the night, and provide troubleshooting solutions to the most common issues that you may encounter. You will very likely not be opening and closing the ballot scanner on your own, but you should pay special attention to the troubleshooting solutions.

Click here to view the manual for Machine Operators. You do not need to print this document, unless you would prefer to. A copy of the Machine Operator manual will be included in the materials at the polling location.
